Does Colour Analysis Work for Dark Skin Tones?

This is one of the most common questions we receive at My Colour Season, and the short answer is: absolutely yes. But it's worth explaining why, because there's a genuine misconception out there that seasonal colour analysis was designed with lighter skin in mind. It wasn't and when it's done properly, it works beautifully for every skin tone.

Where the confusion comes from

Seasonal colour analysis has been around since the 1980s, and like a lot of the beauty and fashion industry at that time, early examples and marketing tended to feature predominantly lighter-skinned women. That legacy has led some people to assume the system doesn't translate. It does, the issue was never the system itself, it was the representation around it.

What colour analysis actually measures

Your colour season isn't determined by how light or dark your skin is. It's determined by your undertone - whether your natural colouring has a warm (golden, yellow) or cool (blue, pink) base, and by the depth and clarity of your overall colouring. These qualities exist in every skin tone, across every ethnicity.

A person with deep brown skin can be a warm Autumn or a cool Winter. Someone with a rich medium complexion can be a Spring or a Summer. Depth of skin tone tells us something about which shades within your season will work best, but it doesn't change the season itself.

Why it can actually be more transformative for deeper skin tones

Here's something worth knowing: for people with deeper skin tones, wearing the wrong undertone can be particularly noticeable. The wrong colours can create a dull, ashy, or muddy effect against rich skin, while the right ones make it glow. The contrast between a harmonious and a clashing colour is often even more striking on deeper complexions, which means the results of getting it right are that much more rewarding.

What about neutrals and black?

One of the most common styling defaults for deeper skin tones is reaching for black, white, or neutral beiges, partly because the fashion industry has historically offered fewer options and partly because these feel "safe." But safe isn't the same as flattering. Knowing your season gives you a whole palette of colours that genuinely work with your colouring, not just around it.

The bottom line

Colour analysis works for everyone. Your season is determined by your undertones, your depth, and your clarity: not your race, ethnicity, or how dark your skin is. People of all backgrounds can be any season, and every season has a full, rich palette to explore.

If you've been curious but assumed this wasn't for you, it is.
